If you make stupid life choices, don’t ask someone else to pay for them. But, if other people are forced to pay for your stupid choices, don’t be surprised when your choices become extremely limited.
Using the socialist party line that “education is a human right,” self-described “democratic-socialist” Bernie Sanders wants taxpayers to pay for ‘free’ college tuition.
His proletariat gal pal, Elizabeth Warren, wants taxpayers to give college kids $50,000 toward their college costs.
As an example why, CNBC recently highlighted a case of a woman who made some pretty stupid decisions and now is half a million dollars in debt:
Elisha Bokman has been out of school for eight years. Still, her student loan balance is half a million dollars.
Today, for her doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine and master’s in acupuncture from Bastyr University, she owes $499,322.69.
She and her husband struggled to buy a house because of her debt. Eventually, the financial stress led them to a divorce. “He felt like he couldn’t live his life or do the things he wanted to do,” Bokman, 38, said. She wanted to open her own medical practice, but she said her student debt prevents her from getting a business loan. [Emphasis added.]
If you haven’t noticed by the excerpt above, CNBC expects you to feel sorry for Ms. Bokman for making stupid life choices that left her in debt and divorced.
Then, to double down on examples in stupidity, CNBC shared another example of a person making a stupid decision:
Rebecca Grable loves her job as a pharmacy manager at Walgreens. But to study at the University of Oklahoma to become a doctor of pharmacy, she borrowed more than $310,000, and said the debt has limited her options. A few years ago, when she tried to buy a car, she said, more than 11 banks denied her a loan. [Emphasis added.]
If taxpayers are going to be forced to pay the tuition of people who choose to go to college, it won’t be long before taxpayers demand (it’s “democratic socialism,” remember?)–and the government will be forced to dictate–which types of degrees college kids will be allowed to get.
For example, instead of Ms. Bokman freely choosing to put herself in debt by pursuing her degrees in naturopathic medicine and acupuncture, if society (taxpayers) are going to be expected to fund her schooling, wouldn’t society be better served with her getting a degree (or certification) in a field that society actually needs (like plumbing or CNC machining)?
“The Committee Of Student Selection believes your test scores are high enough, Comrade Bokman, that you should be assigned to an engineering academy instead of acupuncture.”
Perhaps someone should ask Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren whether their plans will eventually incorporate the government determining what types of degrees people will be allowed to get…Or, better yet, can they guarantee that it won’t?
